RESEARCH: Emery Blagdon’s Healing Machine
The Circle, ARTBARN 2015

Emery Blagdon’s Healing Machines are DIY to the extreme. Spurred by a tragedy in his life, Blagdon believed that he could heal himself using these Healing Machines made from wire, beads and knick-knacks that he had in his unpainted barn in Nebraska. Now on display in the permanent collection at the Kohler Art Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, these pieces are able to heal thousands of people who experience them. When asked how they work, Blagdon would respond with “I don’t know, but they do”. In their summer 2015 piece, THE CIRCLE, ARTBARN’s designer, Deb O, was so inspired by the work of Emery Blagdon that she made one of her own! Audience members were able to experience a machine replica up close and personal as they also experienced the performance.
